- With 40 years at Walt Disney Imagineering, Joe Rohde was the overall creative executive and supervising designer for Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park. With the park’s many expansions throughout Joe’s career, he decided to inscribe the name of each project he tackled… on his boots!
Joe donated his boots to the #WaltDisneyArchives when he retired, and they are carefully looked after by our team. We look forward to celebrating Joe’s legacy at the Disney Legends Awards Ceremony on August 11 at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event! #D23 #WaltDisneyImagineering #DisneyLegends |

- Celebrate Sherlock Holmes Day with us here at the #WaltDisneyArchives as we share several pieces of concept art from “The Great Mouse Detective” (1986)! After a four-year period of story development, animation took just over one year to complete. This remarkably short accomplishment was possible due to new breakthroughs in the production process and an increased emphasis on story development prior to the start of production.

That 21 years before the animated classic “Robin Hood” released in 1973, Disney created its own live-action version of the legend, “The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men” (1952)! - Did you know that Walt Disney had plans to create an animated project based on “The Little Mermaid” as far back as 1934? Illustrator Kay Nielsen prepared several story sketches in pastels and watercolors, including the one featured here, for a proposed film. Unfortunately, the project never went beyond this early stage of development. #MerMay #WaltDisneyArchives

- To help breathe life and realism into Tinker Bell — who made her animation debut in Walt Disney's "Peter Pan" on this day in 1953 — studio animators studied the performances of live-action reference models, including actress Margaret Kerry (pictured here with a pair of oversized scissors).
“It’s great to be able to do body expressions even more than facial expressions,” said the pixie's designer and lead animator, Marc Davis. “The whole physical attitude of somebody [expresses] attitude."
"Sometimes a little pantomime pattern works," he continued, "or maybe somebody will come up with a way of doing something that’ll be kind of cute, and you say, ‘I want to use that.’” #waltdisneyarchives #disneyhistory #disneyanniversary #peterpan #tinkerbell |

- In celebration of the 65th anniversary of Walt Disney’s cinematic triumph “Sleeping Beauty” (1959), the #WaltDisneyArchives is pulling back the curtain on the making of this beloved film.
Prop storybooks date back to Disney’s first animated feature, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” and are often used to introduce Disney films based on fairy tales or classic books. The ornate prop storybook which introduces “Sleeping Beauty,” with many interior illustrated pages depicting a new chapter of the story, is considered the most elaborate prop book created for a Disney animated project. The original “Sleeping Beauty” prop book is currently on display at #Disney100: The Exhibition at the Exhibition Hub Art Center in Chicago, Illinois. |

Determined to produce an animated feature like no other, Walt Disney assigned stylist Eyvind Earle (pictured here) as production designer. Earle applied a stylized approach that was unlike previous animated films by combining Gothic French, Italian, and pre-Renaissance influences with his own abstract style of realism to create the unique elegance seen in “Sleeping Beauty.” Earle was named a Disney Legend in 2015. - Walt Disney Archives a écrit:

To help breathe life and realism into the film’s characters, Walt and his filmmakers enlisted live performers to play out their roles on a soundstage so animators could observe the nuances of their body movements and translate their actions into the two-dimensional realm of animation. For “Sleeping Beauty,” Helene Stanley and Ed Kemmer (pictured here) took on these roles for Princess Aurora and Prince Phillip. |

- In 1923, a young man from the American Midwest, along with his older brother, rented space in the back rooms of a small real estate office in Hollywood, California. Eight days later, on October 16, an agreement was signed to produce an animated series known as the Alice Comedies.
This marked the humble beginning of a family entertainment company that would create unforgettable stories, characters that would become beloved friends, and wondrous experiences that would touch hearts around the world.
Happy 100th anniversary to The Walt Disney Company.
