Trent Correy and I knew we wanted a moment in the short where Mickey would honor Walt, but the thought of it was pretty daunting. What would Mickey say? How much time do you spend on it? We thought for sure this would be something we were going to work and rework and rework but as it turned out, the first version we wrote and layered "Feed the Birds" under it in editorial it just...felt right to us. Here's to you Walt. None of us would be here at the studio if you hadn't stayed with it and pushed through the hard times, the box office disappointments and the people saying you were nuts. Yesterday was another truly magical day at Disney Animation. My co-directing pal Trent Correy and I were able to screen our short “Once Upon a Studio” for the original voice cast of Bambi! That movie came out 81 years ago and it was a thrill to meet (l to r) Peter Behn (Thumper) Donnie Dunagan (Bambi) and Stan Alexander (Flower). They had such great stories about Walt and being such young kids in the film.
The were all very emotional when talking about it which got me emotional.
